German Shepherd Dog - Good Boy - Large - Young - Male - Dog
Update 8/10/13- After deciding Good Boy would most likely be a lifer in my rescue he surprised us on the fourth of July!! All of a sudden he has become a REAL DOG!! At least with us. He was scared quite badly by some horrid little boys that threw fire works into his yard and the part of his brain that would never let him truly trust us fixed itself. Honestly I still have not tried to leash train him as i dont want to over stress him at this point. But instead of having to corner him and pick him up to move around at potty breaks or to come inside at night he is listening to commands now.He craves butt scratches and ear rubs now too. And occasionally he will flip over for a tummy rub. He will still require a very secure at least 6 foot high fence and some patience as he is still not comfortable inside a house there will always be a little of that wild child in him but I am very very proud of his latest achievements. Update9-24-11 Almost a year after coming into the rescue Good Boy has come around quite a bit.He is now very bonded to me and my youngest daughter but strangers still scare him pretty badly. He is always going to have trust issues but is in need of a family with lots of love and patience for him.His adoption fee has been reduced to $100 Good Boy has a very sad story and up until two days before Thanksgiving he also lived a sad and lonely life. We recieved a phone call about a ferral puppy that had been dumped in an empty lot on the outskirts of town.So off we went to see if we could help.Good Boy had no intentions of leaving his corner. You see he thought he had it pretty good there. He was afraid of people and they did not bother him here. Some nice people living nearby (about 6 families that we know of)fed him scraps and bones every day.He slept in a pile of sticks along a bridge and this is all he knew. We learned that his sibling was dumped a mile around the corner and was picked up by the local animal shelter and was PTS back in september. These pups were dumped by some horrible person and left seperated and alone in August.By the time we got the call and started asking questions and making phone calls to the shelter that picked up his sibling it was to late to help that pup. She was deemed unadoptable without even a chance to come around.I was not going to let this happen to Good Boy!! So for 9 days I had friends and family drop me off on his corner with yummy treats (he loves turkey burger meatballs) I had cooked for him a blanket to sit on and more yummy stuff like canned cat food.Every day it was the same thing he would bark at me and retreat but could not help himself from coming back for me to throw some more food out towards him. We had many conversations out there in the cold and sometimes the rain for at least two hours everyday. On day 5 he came running to me with a stick to play fetch! He dropped it a few feet away and backed off for me to throw it. Then he would chase after it with all his puppyness and then lay it just out of my reach and back off again. I had many people pass by and stop to tell me I would never catch this little guy as he was wild. This only made me try harder. We even tried some knock out drugs that the vet recommended for him but although he slowed down a bit he was always one step ahead of me and with plenty of speed behind him if I got too close. But on day 8 he let me pet him just briefly but I could tell he liked it. And when I left that night as I was laying flat on the ground he snuck in and licked my face before backpeddling just quick enough that I could not reach out to grab him. I told him then that he was coming home with me tomorrow no matter what. Day 9 he came running almost all the way to the van to greet me and wanted to play some more fetch.I played with him a while then put some more pills in his cat food breakfast which he refused to eat all he wanted to do was play. So I decided to drive around so he would eat them so the whole capture would be easeir as he is a very SMART boy and we were running out of time and gas money to keep trying
